Qualifications:

• Possess the following certifications and keep all certifications current,:
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED/First Aid certification (attach to application)
• Must be 15 year of age or older
• Ability to demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Ability to professionally and effectively communicate with members, staff and supervisors
• Have an outgoing, friendly approach that will lead and motivate members
• Ability to maintain a level of physical and mental readiness at all times.
• Evening availability Monday through Friday between 4:15pm and 8:45pm
• Weekend availability, Saturday 5:45am-4:45pm, and Sunday 8:45am-4:45pm
• Commitment to work at least 10 hours a month, flexibility to choose shifts

Willing to train -

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:

• Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed)
• Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs
• Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

• Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
• Submerge to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
• Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
• Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

To become a lifeguard you will need to attend and pass a certification class, the next training will take place December 6 (4-9pm), December 7 (8:30am-5pm), and December 8 (8am-4pm) at the East YMCA at a cost of $250. Limited space is available. If you are hired and work for us for 3 months you will be reimbursed 100% for the class fee. (Additional class option December 26-27, 8am-4:30pm, and December 28th 8am-1pm at the West YMCA)
